31% of Roofing Sites Have No Schema Markup — Here's the Free Fix

Schema markup is the single most misunderstood element in roofing SEO. It’s invisible to homeowners. It takes five minutes to add. And 438 of the 1,409 roofing websites we audited across Texas, Florida, and Georgia don’t have it at all.

That’s 31% of roofing companies operating without the code that tells Google “this is a roofing contractor, here’s our phone number, here are our services, and here’s our service area.” Without it, Google is guessing — and Google doesn’t guess in your favor.

This post explains what schema markup does in plain terms, shows you exactly what to add, and walks through the five-minute fix that can improve your local search visibility starting this week.

Schema Markup Tells Google What Your Website Can’t

Your website tells homeowners what your business does through words, photos, and design. But Google’s crawlers don’t experience your website the way a human does. They read code. And the standard HTML code on your website doesn’t answer the questions Google needs answered.

Google needs to know: Are you a roofing company or a roofing supply store? Do you serve residential or commercial customers? What cities do you cover? What’s your phone number — not the one in a paragraph of text, but the official business line? What hours are you open? What’s your rating?

Schema markup answers all of these questions in a structured format Google is built to read. It’s a block of code — specifically JSON-LD format — that sits in the head of your webpage. Humans never see it. Google reads it instantly.

Think of it as filling out a form. Without schema, you’re handing Google a novel and hoping it finds the relevant details. With schema, you’re handing Google a completed application with every field filled in.

What We Found: 438 Roofing Sites With Zero Schema

When we audited 1,409 roofing websites across 121 cities in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, we checked every site for LocalBusiness and RoofingContractor schema markup. The results were worse than expected.

31% had no schema markup at all. No LocalBusiness. No RoofingContractor. No Organization. Nothing. Google is left to figure out the business type from page content alone.

Of the 69% that did have some schema, many had incomplete or incorrect implementations. Common problems included missing phone numbers, missing service areas, and generic “LocalBusiness” type instead of the more specific “RoofingContractor” type that Google recognizes.

The sites scoring above 80 on our Website Quality Index had schema markup at a 83% rate. The sites scoring below 40 had it at just 55%. Schema isn’t the only difference between those groups, but it’s a consistent one.

What RoofingContractor Schema Looks Like

Google recognizes a specific business type called RoofingContractor. It’s part of the Schema.org vocabulary — a standardized library of business types that all major search engines support. Using RoofingContractor instead of the generic LocalBusiness tells Google exactly what trade you’re in.

Here’s what a complete RoofingContractor schema block includes:

Business identity. Your company name, the type of business (RoofingContractor), your logo URL, and a description of your services.

Contact information. Your phone number, email address, and physical address. This is the information Google cross-references with your Google Business Profile — mismatches hurt your ranking.

Service area. The cities and regions you serve. This is critical for roofing companies that travel to job sites rather than operating from a storefront customers visit.

Operating hours. When you’re open. Google uses this to determine whether to show your listing for “emergency roof repair” searches at 9 PM on a Saturday.

Aggregate rating. Your review count and average rating. This can trigger rich snippets — the star ratings that appear directly in search results.

Services offered. A list of your specific services: residential re-roofing, storm damage repair, metal roofing, gutter installation, commercial flat roofs. Each service you list helps Google match you to more specific searches.

The Five-Minute Fix: Adding Schema to Your Site

Adding schema markup to a roofing website takes less time than writing a Google Ads headline. Here’s the process, step by step.

Step 1: Gather your business information. You need your exact business name (as it appears on your Google Business Profile), your phone number, your address, your service area cities, your hours, and your Google review count and rating.

Step 2: Generate the JSON-LD code. You don’t need to write this by hand. Free schema generators exist online — you fill in the fields and the tool produces the code. Use the “RoofingContractor” type, not “LocalBusiness.”

Step 3: Paste the code into your website. The JSON-LD block goes inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag in the <head> section of your homepage. If you use WordPress, you can paste it into a header scripts plugin. If you use a website builder like Wix or Squarespace, there’s usually a “custom code” option in settings.

Step 4: Validate the code. Google provides a free Rich Results Test tool. Paste your URL and verify that Google can read your schema. Fix any errors — usually missing fields or formatting issues.

Step 5: Add schema to key interior pages. Your homepage gets the main RoofingContractor schema. But your service pages should each have their own schema describing that specific service. And your service area pages should include schema for each location.

The entire process takes five minutes for the homepage and another two minutes per additional page. It’s a one-time investment.

What Schema Does for Your Local Search Rankings

Schema markup doesn’t directly boost your ranking — Google has said this explicitly. But it does three things that indirectly improve your visibility in local search.

It improves click-through rates. Sites with schema can trigger rich snippets — star ratings, business hours, and phone numbers displayed directly in search results. A listing with 4.8 stars and “127 reviews” gets clicked more than a plain text listing. Higher click-through rates signal to Google that your listing is relevant, which improves ranking over time.

It eliminates ambiguity. When Google is deciding which businesses to show in the Map Pack for “roof repair in [city],” it needs to be confident that your business is actually a roofing company in that city. Schema removes all doubt. Without it, Google might not be sure whether you’re a roofing company, a roofing supply store, or a general contractor who occasionally does roofing.

It connects your website to your Google Business Profile. Schema includes your business name, phone, and address — the same information in your GBP. When these match exactly, Google treats your website and your GBP as verified representations of the same business. This is the NAP consistency that every local SEO factor depends on.

In our audit, roofing companies with complete schema markup were 2.4 times more likely to appear in the Map Pack for their primary city’s “roofer near me” search than companies without schema.

Common Schema Mistakes Roofing Sites Make

Even among the 69% of roofing sites that do have schema, we found frequent errors that undermine the markup’s effectiveness.

Using LocalBusiness instead of RoofingContractor. The generic type works, but the specific type is better. Google has a dedicated category for roofing contractors — use it. You’re leaving specificity on the table when you default to the broad category.

Phone number mismatch. The phone number in your schema must match the number on your Google Business Profile exactly. If you use a call tracking number on your website, your schema should still contain your primary business number. This is one of the most common issues we found — 22% of sites with schema had a phone number that didn’t match their GBP.

Missing service area. Many roofing companies list their office address but don’t specify the cities they serve. For a service-area business — which most roofers are — the service area declaration is how Google knows to show you for searches in cities where you don’t have a physical office.

No aggregate rating. If you have Google reviews, include your rating and review count in your schema. This is what triggers the star rating display in search results. Without it, your listing appears as plain text while competitors show their 4.9 stars.

Stale information. Schema with outdated hours, a disconnected phone number, or a wrong address is worse than no schema at all. If you move offices, change phone numbers, or update your hours, update your schema at the same time.

Schema for Service Pages: The Next-Level Move

Most guides stop at homepage schema. That’s a mistake. The roofing companies ranking for the most search terms in our audit have schema on every major page of their site.

Service pages. Each service page — residential re-roofing, metal roofing, storm damage repair, commercial roofing — should have a Service schema that describes what the service is, who it’s for, and the area it’s available in. This helps Google match that page to specific service-related searches.

Service area pages. If you have a page for “Roofing in Plano, TX,” that page should include schema with the city name, the services offered in that city, and the business contact information. This is the strongest signal you can send Google about your geographic coverage.

Review pages. If you display customer testimonials on your site, each review can include Review schema with the reviewer’s name, the rating, and the review body. This reinforces your aggregate rating and gives Google more content to work with.

The companies in our 34-element checklist that score highest on the SEO category have schema on an average of 8 pages — homepage, about, contact, and five service or area pages.

There’s a steep drop-off after the homepage. Most sites that have schema only put it on one page. That’s better than nothing — but it leaves significant local search value on the table.

The Connection Between Schema and the Google Map Pack

The Google Map Pack — the three business listings shown on the map at the top of local search results — drives the majority of clicks for roofing searches. Appearing in the Map Pack for “roofer near me” in your city is worth more than any ad campaign.

Schema markup directly supports your Map Pack ranking by reinforcing the signals Google uses to determine which businesses to show.

Signal 1: Relevance. Google needs to know you’re a roofing contractor, not a general contractor. RoofingContractor schema makes this explicit. Your GBP category does too, but the schema reinforces it from your website side.

Signal 2: Proximity. Google needs to know you serve the searcher’s city. Service area declarations in your schema tell Google exactly which cities you cover — even ones where you don’t have a physical office.

Signal 3: Prominence. Google uses your review count, rating, and overall web presence to determine how prominent your business is. Aggregate rating schema makes your review data machine-readable, which strengthens this signal.

Sites without schema are relying entirely on their GBP and general website content for these signals. Sites with schema are sending the same signals from two directions — GBP and website — which gives Google more confidence to rank them.

Schema Won’t Fix a Broken Website — But It Fixes a Hidden One

Schema markup is not a magic fix for all lead generation problems. If your website has no Free Estimate CTA — and 31% of roofing sites don’t — schema won’t help you convert visitors. If your site loads in 12 seconds on mobile, schema won’t make it faster. If you have no project photos, schema won’t build trust.

What schema does is solve the visibility problem. It makes sure Google can find you, categorize you, and show you to the right searchers. It’s the foundation layer — the thing that has to be in place before any other SEO effort pays off.

In our audit data, the roofing companies with complete schema plus strong website fundamentals score 23 points higher on the Website Quality Index than companies with strong fundamentals but no schema. The fundamentals drive conversions. The schema drives traffic to convert.
